There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect location, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling den, features 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous comforts in addition to the casino, which provides ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
