There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den betting is not legal. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are apparently required to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel building that highlights many luxuries in addition to the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
